Abstract

The research question addressed in this project was how can modeling best practice writing strategies improve the quality of student writing in a second grade classroom? It documents one teachers plan to integrate the language of the 6+1 Traits of Writing with the process of Writer's Workshop. Key influences for this capstone came from the work of Lucy Calkins, Donald Graves and Ruth Culham. The author develops and implements lesson plans using modeling as a primary focus to integrate the two previously mentioned writing models. She describes the outcomes as both successes and challenges and then reflects the effectiveness of her teaching.
