Abstract

My research and paper resulted from the question, What tools and resources would facilitate elementary teachers to create an inclusive learning environment to successfully mainstream a hearing-impaired student in their classrooms? Teachers require resources and support from hearing specialists to create a learning environment so hearing-impaired students will have the academic and social/emotion opportunity to develop to their potential. Therefore, this paper is designed as a resource to educate teachers about hearing loss and practical instructional modifications and strategies. The research method was a curriculum design using public records, and researcher-generated documents. I then used the research to create a handbook for teachers with limited experience teaching children with a hearing loss. This study was influenced by my personal experiences working with hearing-impaired children, their families, interactions with hearing experts, and colleagues.
