Abstract

Does the implementation of sensory strategies increase on-task behaviors in children diagnosed as having ADHD? It documents a study that included the use of weighted vests and therapy balls used as seats to increase the level of attention in students with ADHD. Key influences included current students, peer educators, peer learners, the occupational therapy department, the research and literature of Dr. Daniel Amen, and other authors such as Kutscher, Rief, Fowler, etc. The research method consisted of students wearing a weighted vest for thirty minutes then using a therapy ball as a chair in the mainstream classroom. Fifteen observations over a three week period were conducted by the author using the interval time sampling method. Through the use of graphs and descriptions of specific observations, she concludes that weighted vests and therapy balls are effective strategies for increasing on-task behaviors in children diagnosed as having ADHD.
