Abstract
The research question addressed is does the use of student journals foster learning in an environmental biology class? The motivating factor for this capstone was to bring writing, drawing and enthusiasm into the classroom. Instead of using worksheets as previously done, these tenth grade students used learning journals for four different labs. The study was designed to determine if there was a difference in mean test scores between the year worksheets were used and the year journals were used. In analysis of the data, there was no statistically significant difference between mean test scores of students using learning journals and those using worksheets. Students did comment however, that they prefer the journals to the worksheets and that their learning process did change.
